C-Funk is both the name of this crew and of its founder and lead rapper. Raised in East Palo Alto, California, C-Funk was signed to Paris' then-Scarface Records, along with groupmate "Mozilla," and was produced by Paris for the duo's major-label debut, Three Dimensional Ear Pleasure.
"He's the bass, I'm the treble," says C-Funk," and indeed the two have been partners for years. The pair grew up on "pure supergroovealistic, deep-down-under-the-mothership-type funk" - which serves just fine as a description of the P-Funk-inspired project.
The album's lead single and video, "Lime in Ya Coconut," is a naughty, dancehall-flavored rewrite of Harry Nilsson's tropical pop hit of 1972.
"Keep Rollin" is an evocative and super-funky summer song worthy of Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince- except that it'll never earn a G-rating. "Don't You Know" has cool Macolm-McClaren overtones, and "Get off my Sack" is a g-funk middle finger to all doubters.
Further, "Whoop Whoop Yeah Yeah" is a high-powered party song that's been a staple of C-Funk's repertoire for years, and "Chill and Kick Back," for all its funkiness, is damned-near a love song.
So there it is. C-Funk comin' at you in three dimensions: sex, funk, and reality.
